What Conscious Consumers Are Really Looking For in 2026

Real insights from conscious consumers on trust, transparency and decision-making in 2026 – and how brands can meet them with integrity.

Something subtle but important is shifting in the conscious consumer space.

People are still deeply committed to choosing products that are safer, more ethical and more sustainable. But how they make those decisions – and what helps them feel confident doing so – has evolved.

To understand this more clearly, we went straight to the source.

Our recent consumer survey offered a rare window into the minds of people who actively seek out clean and conscious products. Not just what they say they care about, but what genuinely helps them choose, trust and commit.

The insights that emerged are encouraging, grounding and incredibly useful for brands doing this work with integrity.

Here’s what conscious consumers are really looking for in 2026 – and how brands can meet them there.

What conscious consumers are looking for in 2026 - Clean + Conscious Awards

Trust is built through reassurance, not noise

One of the strongest themes across the survey was the desire for reassurance.

Conscious consumers aren’t looking for louder claims or more marketing. They want to feel steady in their decisions. They want signals that help them move from uncertainty to confidence without needing to over-research every purchase.

Trust, for consumers, is less about bold promises and more about quiet consistency. When it’s present, choosing feels calm. When it’s missing, hesitation creeps in.

Ingredient transparency is now essential

If there is one area where consumers are completely clear, it’s this: ingredient transparency matters.

In our survey, 88.6% of consumers said ingredient transparency gives them confidence in a product, and 89.5% said a clear ingredient summary or breakdown is important to them.

Consumers don’t want to decode labels, chase information across multiple pages or rely on vague claims. They want clarity, upfront.

Brands that communicate ingredients openly and accessibly are giving consumers permission to relax. They’re saying, “You don’t need to second-guess this. We’ve been thoughtful, and we’re happy to show you why.”

Clean and safe ingredients still lead decision-making

While values like sustainability and ethics remain important, clean and safe ingredients continue to be the primary driver of choice.

When asked what matters most when choosing a conscious product, 76.7% of consumers selected clean and safe ingredients.

This reinforces something many conscious brands already know: beautiful branding and strong storytelling only work when the foundations are solid. Consumers want products that feel good to use and good to trust.

And in a space where greenwashing has left many people cautious, reassurance around ingredients is not just appreciated – it’s expected.

Consumers want help choosing, not more information

Another powerful insight from the survey is how much consumers value guidance.

Conscious consumers are engaged, but they’re also time-poor. They don’t want to spend hours researching every product or weighing up endless claims. They want support in making good choices more easily.

They want to feel informed – not overwhelmed.

Where the Clean + Conscious Awards stamp matters most

It’s here, at the moment of decision, that the survey results become especially interesting.

When conscious consumers are choosing between products side by side – similar claims, similar pricing, similar aesthetics – the preference is clear. An overwhelming 97% of respondents said they are more likely to try or purchase a product that has won a Clean + Conscious Award.

That trust extends beyond individual products. The survey also revealed that a significant proportion of consumers have purchased products directly through the Clean + Conscious directory, using it as a trusted shortcut to discover and choose brands they feel confident supporting.

For many consumers, seeing a product with the Clean + Conscious Awards stamp or listed in the directory removes uncertainty altogether. It offers quiet reassurance that the product has already been thoughtfully assessed and aligns with their values – without needing to dig deeper or second-guess.

In a crowded market, this kind of trust isn’t built through loud claims. It’s built through consistency, transparency and time.

Why this trust goes beyond a single product

What the survey also showed is that once consumers trust the Clean + Conscious Awards, they tend to return to them again and again.

Many shared that they actively use the Awards and directory as a way to discover new brands they wouldn’t have otherwise found. Rather than starting from scratch, they look to this curated ecosystem as a trusted starting point – knowing the products featured have already been carefully considered for ingredients, ethics and impact.

Another strong theme was decision fatigue. Conscious consumers care deeply, but many told us they simply don’t have the time or energy to research every product themselves. Seeing the Clean + Conscious Awards stamp helps them make faster, more confident decisions, reducing the need for extensive research and helping them choose well without overwhelm.

The role of trusted experts

The survey also highlighted how much consumers value expert involvement. Many shared that knowing products have been reviewed by a highly regarded, values-aligned expert panel adds a meaningful layer of confidence – particularly in categories like skincare, beauty and ingestibles, where safety and efficacy matter deeply.

The calibre of the Clean + Conscious Awards judges, including trusted practitioners, educators, journalists and industry leaders, is something consumers clearly respect. For them, it’s reassuring to know that products haven’t just been assessed on paper, but thoughtfully reviewed by experienced experts who genuinely understand ingredients, formulations and conscious living.

Together, this combination of independent assessment, expert review and trusted curation creates a framework consumers can rely on – not just for one purchase, but for many.

What this means for conscious brands in 2026

The takeaway from this survey is not pressure – it’s possibility.

Conscious consumers are engaged, thoughtful and actively seeking brands they can trust. They want help choosing well. They want clarity, not complexity. And they deeply value reassurance when navigating a crowded market.

For brands, this is an opportunity to communicate with confidence. To lean into transparency. To welcome assessment. And to meet consumers where they are, rather than shouting louder to try to convince them.
