In recent years, the three-step “cleanse, tone, moisturise” beauty routine lovingly passed down to us by our mothers has become somewhat obsolete. These days we’re faced with neverending choices when it comes to planning a beauty regime: serum or face oil? Cleansing oil or cleanser? It can all feel a tad bit overwhelming.
One beauty product that I’ve had the absolute joy of trialling (thanks to being an Expert Panellist on the Clean + Conscious Awards) is face oil. To be honest, I’d previously resisted using a face oil – I mean, I spent most of my years as a teenager and 20-something trying to remove oil from my skin!
However, upon trialling my first-ever facial oil, I was surprised by how instantly soft it made my skin feel. Over the course of the first few weeks of use, it completely transformed my skin. Not only did my skin become softer, plumper and smoother, but my open pores closed and the clogged pores and blackheads around my t-zone completely cleared up. Overall, my skin became more balanced, healthy, glowing and blemish-free.
Today, I can’t live without this miracle product. Here are my five top reasons for trying a face oil:
1. Face oils are super hydrating
Because facial oils are composed of essential omega fatty acids, they can penetrate skin and pass through the lipid layer. This helps to lock in moisture and makes face oils ideal for dry or maturing skin, or for use during the dryer, winter months of the year. For an extra boost of hydration and to further lock in moisture, layer moisturiser over the top.
2. Face oils don’t contain water
Face oils are anhydrous, i.e. they don’t contain any water. This means there’s no need for skincare formulators to add potentially harmful ingredients such as preservatives or emulsifiers. It also makes them an excellent non-toxic addition to your skincare regime.
3. Face oils are multi-purpose
Despite their namesake, face oils are multifunctional! They can be applied as a primer when applying makeup, underneath moisturiser as a face mask before bed, as a soother for sunburn or as a body massage oil. Face oil can also assist with scar fading and can help clear up dry spots when applied to elbows, hands or lips.
4. Face oils are unlikely to make your skin oily
If you suffer with oily skin or acne, you might be wondering why on earth you’d want to add more oil to your skin? Facial oils are suitable for all skin types because they mimic the skin’s natural sebum production process. This means they actively work to balance and reduce the excess oils produced by your skin, as opposed to simply adding an extra layer of oil to your skin.
5. Face oils can act as a protective barrier
When applied to the skin, face oils not only seal the good stuff in, but can act as a barrier against environmental enemies. Free radicals, generated through environmental stressors such as pollution and UV light, attack healthy skin cells through the process of oxidisation. When oxygen is taken from our skin cells, the skin can age much faster. Face oils act as a barrier against free radicals, helping to protect your skin from premature ageing.
