2026 Winners Announced

Kirra Kite – Coast Kids

FINALIST
Best Kids Activities 2025

$25.00

The Kirra kite promotes outdoor activity with its all-season design. Constructed from recycled plastic bottles, it features a fabric kite, tail and storage bag, along with a fibreglass spine and durable handle. Enjoy sunny days while supporting eco-friendly practices.

Made from RPET - material from recycled plastic bottles, fibreglass spine and small recycled plastic clip.
Coast Kids, a two-person business, is dedicated to improving its social responsibilities by utilising QIMA, an independent product testing company, to ensure the quality of their products in China before release in Australia. This testing represents a significant investment for the small business. The brand maintains strong relationships with their manufacturers, prioritising small-scale factories over large operations, as many suppliers are considered like family, fostering a preferable model over being just another number in a large production setting.
Coast Kids focuses on sustainability by using recycled or non-biodegradable materials to create products like hats, bags for beach toys and beach toys made from waste products, reusable materials and recycled plastic bottles. Their kites are specifically made from the fibers of recycled plastic bottles, addressing pollution in waterways. The Australian warehouse operates on a low-waste model, sourcing suppliers in China who avoid unnecessary plastic packaging and reusing boxes adorned with a "this box has been given a second life" sticker. They utilise compostable mailers and labels and are actively seeking more sustainable packaging methods as they expand.
Coast Kids donates to local schools and fundraisers, having supported two schools and one soccer club in their community to enhance extracurricular activities and aid the soccer club's recovery post-COVID. The founders actively volunteer as coaches and managers at local nippers, soccer and football clubs. In 2025, they plan to expand their social responsibility by donating a percentage of their products to support a global community and are currently identifying suitable organisations for this initiative.

Product Reviews by Experts

I loved it! Kites feel nostalgic (so the adults loved it!) but at the same time so relevant, (kids love the novelty too) and anything that encourages more outside time and less screen time is a win for me! It was easy to set up and to use. I LOVED that it was made from recycled plastic bottles! Such a cool idea to give a second life to waste and repurpose it into fun. For a small brand the fact that they use independent quality testing, I thought was personally very responsible.

We have got a lot of delight out of this kite. Our 3 year old handles it a charm! Gorgeous classic design. It seems durable! A good size for young children. Lots of fun had thus far!! Wonderful use of recycled plastic bottles- kites need to be durable and are therefore inevitably made from plastic fibres, so this is a fantastic step in the right direction! Packaging is minimal and natural/recyclable and compostable (cardboard). Can’t get any better than this!

I like the joy it brings to little ones! So much fun to be had and we live near the beach so it’s perfect for our lifestyle. The colours are just beautiful as well. So much fun! I think it’s amazing that the kite has been mostly made from recycled plastic bottles. I love that this brand gets involved with their local community and donates to local schools/fundraisers.
