Their packaging includes recyclable plastic tubes, kraft board mailing boxes and biodegradable packing peanuts, with plans to switch to biodegradable bio-plastic tubes by late 2025 or early 2026. Seadragon Organic is also collabourating with the start-up Kelpy to develop a seaweed-based biopolymer for a plastic-free future.
Sustainable Practices
Seadragon Organic integrates sustainability into all decision-making processes, ensuring that products contain 100% naturally derived ingredients, 0% water and 98% RSPO Certified ingredients, while being mixed without heat and preservative-free. Extensive research on packaging led to the choice of recyclable plastic tubes accepted by Australian kerbside recycling as an interim option, moving away from glass, which has a high carbon footprint and aluminium tubes that are often non-recyclable due to internal linings. The formulations are designed to be water-free, reducing resource reliance and made without heat to lower energy use, utilising only certified organic ingredients and natural preservatives from plants. Large 100g tubes minimise packaging purchases over a year, and starting in 2024, the products will maintain high sustainability without sacrificing performance.
Social Impact
Seadragon Organic sponsors an award for the local South Australian charity Puddle Jumpers for their staff and volunteers awards night and provides their expertise as a cosmetic chemist to the startup Kelpy to test the suitability of a kelp bio-polymer that may eventually replace all plastics.
