Salt Gypsy – The Maven Surfsuit

Made from sustainable fabric. Made with ECONYL Regenerated Nylon, a fibre made using ghost nets and waste from landfill.
Salt Gypsy’s products are made in Australia by veterans of the Australian Stretchwear Industry. The brand works closely with their woman-owned and operated boutique production team on the Gold Coast, using Italian stretch fabrics made from ECONYL® regenerated nylon yarn. The garments are thoughtfully designed for long-lasting wear and transcending the fast fashion cycle. Not only does the brand predominantly work with woman-owned manufacturers in their domestic supply chain, they also work mainly with female talent across marketing: photographers, videographers, stylists, content creators, models.
Since 2015, Salt Gypsy only uses high grade stretch fabrics made from regenerated nylon (specifically ECONYL®) and are introducing hemp apparel into the product range. The brand is researching the use of hemp fabrics as surfwear with special consideration of Ultraviolet Protection Factor and microfibre shedding of nylon from traditional stretch fabrics used in swim and surf industries. Salt Gypsy uses biodegradable and compostable garment polybags made from cassava root starch, only swing-tag garments (recyclable card, plastic-free) for wholesale orders, offer Carbon Offset option at checkout on sites and use biodegradable and compostable mailer satchels.
Salt Gypsy has made various product and monetary donations to individual female surf athletes and community groups. These include surf legging donations to women and girls in Iran as part of our Waves of Freedom collaboration and to women and girls in Bali, Indonesia, as part of their association with Surf and Social Good Summit. In addition, they have given prize donations to various female boardrider groups across Australia and New Zealand. The brand has also been involved in fundraising events, such as for Oceanwomen in Business: A Chilly Bin Full of Bevvies and has been involved in several brand and product collaborations with a portion of proceeds donated to brand partners, such as SurfAid, Child Health Programme (to date) and The Huts Land Regeneration Programme. Salt Gypsy’s Founder, Danielle Clayton, is a board member of Aotearoa Women's Surfing Association (AWSA) New Zealand. The brand regularly enlists friends, community and customers into their photoshoots and community events.

What our experts say...

The Maven Surfsuit was clearly made for performance. The recycled nylon fabric is sturdy and supportive, providing coverage in all the right places. This is a quality piece for hitting the beach. Salt Gypsy’s commitment to Australian made is impressive and their environmental values are clear. The brand’s move to recycled fibres helps to reduce their impact and their comms and production seem to be on the same page.

Sleek, stylish, functional and statement making all in one. I love that the seam lines are so flatteringly patterned around the leg and waist, completely avoiding my hip and stomach area. I’m also a huge fan of the timeless square-cut top, which looks great and gives me full coverage and freedom of movement, so that I can concentrate on having fun and catching that wave.

This sleek Surfsuit is such a flattering cut (especially at the shoulders) and is easy to pull on and off before and after surfs or ocean swims. I feel elegant and confident when wearing it. I appreciate that this product is made in Australia using ECONYL and that many surf related initiatives are supported.
