Beauty and the Bees is a female-owned business based in Tasmania, Australia, founded by Jill Saunders in 1993. The brand specialises in eco-friendly beauty products made with local, high-quality ingredients like Tasmanian herbs and Leatherwood honey and it has maintained its commitment to being single-use plastic free for 32 years. The brand supports 12 Tasmanian families through local employment and sources its raw ingredients from long-standing relationships with nearby farms and producers. The brand prioritises ethical practices, including no animal testing, testing products on friends and family instead and a strict stance against child labour, ensuring fair wages for its employees. The brand avoids plastic packaging to prevent the leaching of harmful chemicals and remains committed to supporting the local Tasmanian economy.
Beauty and the Bees, has been a pioneer in the green beauty movement for 32 years, focusing on sustainability by avoiding plastic containers. They are 99.9% plastic-free, using glass, cardboard or aluminum for packaging, with plastic only for unavoidable sealants. Their environmentally conscious practices have prevented approximately 3 million plastic bottles from being manufactured and they utilise locally sourced cardboard and biodegradable materials for shipping. The brand emphasises sourcing raw ingredients from Tasmanian producers to reduce carbon footprints and has eliminated palm oil from their products since 2004, opting instead for RSPO-certified ingredients when necessary. Furthermore their operations are powered by sustainable hydroelectric energy.
Beauty and the Bees is dedicated to supporting the Tasmanian economy by hiring locally and backing local farmers, apiarists and small businesses that supply their raw materials. The brand actively employs migrants to Tasmania, valuing the traditional and sustainable beauty care practices they bring from their cultures. They ethically source imported plant oils from plantations that aim to mitigate habitat depletion for wildlife. Additionally, the brand donates to various charities, including the Bob Brown Foundation, Rotary International School Support in Fiji, the National Breast Cancer Foundation, the Cancer Council and Dogs Homes of Tasmania.

Product Reviews by Experts

Smells beautiful, my hair felt great and I love that it replaces 3 bottles of liquid shampoo! Such a great product- I was actually very surprised, given past experience with shampoo bars. Praise bee! Beauty and the Bees were doing zero waste before it became cool. A pioneer in Australia when it comes to solid shampoo bars (and plastic-free products), they are an incredibly inspiring brand with a huge list of impressive initiatives.

I’ve typically steered clear of shampoo bars thinking they just weren’t made for my thick, curly hair- how wrong I was! Made from rare Tasmanian Leatherwood honey and beeswax, rosehip oil, Argan oil and Tassie-grown organic herbs, this left my hair feeling silkier and softer than it has for ages. It lathered well and smelt beautiful. I love that it’s perfect for home or travel and the fact that a single bar replaces three bottles of liquid shampoo is also incredible. Consider me a convert! As a pioneer in Australia’s ‘green beauty’ movement for over 3 decades and the first solid haircare brand, Beauty and the Bees are the blueprint of a successful business that lives and breathes care and consideration for the environment and community. I love the deep relationships and commitment it still has to its home in Tasmania, hiring locally and sourcing all its raw ingredients from nearby farms and producers who have been partners for decades. No single-use plastic ever may seem a simple ethos but it’s a powerful one- the brand is 99.9% plastic free too. With an estimated 3 million plastic bottles prevented from being manufactured in the first place, I love that they are still always looking for ways to improve every aspect across their packaging and manufacturing. Beauty and the Bees shows what’s possible and powerful when it comes to clean and conscious beauty.

So many wonderful ingredients in the shampoo bar. It has engaging packaging and a pleasant smell. It felt nourishing on my hair once I got enough product to use. Shampoo bars are definitely a better option for the environment. I was impressed by the use of raw materials that are free of harsh chemicals. I also loved seeing so much social responsibility via all the charities that this brand donates too.
