Product Reviews by Experts

I really enjoyed Last Sanctuary Native Gin, not only for its beautiful flavour but for the story behind it. It feels like a very Tasmanian spirit, with native botanicals, rainwater and bull kelp giving it a distinctive sense of place. I loved that it is small-batch, family made and crafted with care, but also that every bottle supports conservation of the critically endangered Red Handfish. It is a gin that feels thoughtful and special, with a lovely balance of flavour, purpose and provenance. I really appreciate the strong sense of place and practical approach to sustainability, from local Tasmanian sourcing and onsite production to recycled glass, compostable closures, plastic-free shipping and bottle return initiatives. The use of solar power, rainwater and recycled water systems also shows meaningful progress. I was pleased to see their focus on fair workplace practices, safety, local conservation and respect for the Palawa people of Lutruwita.

This is an absolutely stunning gin, from the bottle and packaging, right through to the taste. Delightfully aromatic, it pays a true homage to Australian native botanicals. I was really impressed by Derwent Distillery’s ethical & sustainable practices. From their commitment to locally sourced & organic ingredients, to their environmental & conservation stewardship, right down to their packaging. They are walking the talk of their values and it shines in every aspect of their brand.

What I like most is that this gin has a flavour that’s a little different from the norm. The native Tasmanian botanicals give it a fresh, distinctive character, but it’s still really easy to drink. I enjoyed that it felt just as good in a simple G&T as it would in a more considered cocktail. I really like that the sustainability story isn’t just about the packaging. Supporting Red Handfish conservation through every bottle sold gives the product a genuine connection to Tasmania, and it’s backed up by practical initiatives like refill programs, bottle returns and sourcing ingredients locally wherever possible. It feels like the brand has put real thought into how it operates.
