71bay commits to ethical operations through partnerships with World Fair Trade organisation-registered non-profits in Bangladesh, adhering to Fair Trade principles that empower communities by teaching skills and creating jobs. The organisation emphasises the positive impacts of fair work on marginalised populations, evidenced by university graduations and reduced domestic stress. By utilising traditional crafting techniques, 71bay honors cultural heritage and follows the principle of "touching the ground lightly" by carefully selecting environmentally sustainable materials, including recycled components and locally grown, biodegradable jute. The focus on building a strong business ensures fair wages and working conditions for artisans, resulting in better financial security and improved access to healthcare and education for their families.
71bay specialises in crafting objects from Jute, Kantha and metal, chosen for their sustainability, cultural significance and heritage. The brand emphasises the use of locally sourced raw materials to minimise environmental impacts related to transportation. Jute, a biodegradable material with a low carbon footprint, is handcrafted by women artisans in rural Bangladesh, who utilise various techniques while earning fair wages. Their metal ornaments are made from recycled bronze and copper sourced from shipyards, presented in handmade paper envelopes that illustrate the impact on their makers. Kantha, meaning 'patched cloth' in Bengal, repurposes old sarees into functional quilts, historically created by women for warmth, with no new materials used in their production.
Artisans in villages benefit from direct employment opportunities that allow them to stay within their communities and earn fair wages, reducing displacement to overcrowded cities. The initiative empowers artisans, particularly women, by providing training and employment for their male relatives as jute farmers, thus strengthening community ties. The focus on preserving traditional craftsmanship ensures that age-old skills are passed down through generations. In urban areas, the program engages sex workers and victims of trafficking, allowing them to reclaim dignity through craftwork and communal support, while empowering them with financial literacy and life skills. Education is prioritised to combat child labour and early marriages, with efforts made to provide stable employment and secure a sustainable future through local schools and ongoing alliances.

Product Reviews by Experts

Absolutely stunning. The design is beautiful and the crafts(wo)manship is incredible. This basket is a showstopper and is more than just visually eye-catching, it also captures the heart and soul with the stories and social impact woven through the design. Everything is impressive! This inspiring fair trade brand is doing more than just creating beautiful products, it’s protecting and supporting traditional crafts and empowering women and communities, while working with the most sustainable and culturally significant materials possible. 71bay brings me hope; the perfect balance of consumerism, community and care!

The Mohona basket is equal parts functional object and work of art. I love its versatility- open, it’s perfect for storing everyday essentials; drawn closed, it hides plant pots or clutter while still looking sculptural and serene. 71bay’s commitment to fair trade and community-driven empowerment is among the most comprehensive and deeply human I’ve seen. From preserving traditional jute craftsmanship in rural Bangladesh to directly supporting women artisans- many of whom work from home while raising families- the impact of each basket goes far beyond aesthetics. Their efforts to reduce rural-to-urban displacement, preserve generational skills and support women overcoming trauma is also amazing.

I love the story behind the brand and the story behind the artisans. It brings the basket to life and certainly makes it very special and meaningful. The basket itself is beautiful and the weaving is stunning. I love the way we can see who made the product and trace it back to the artisans. I love that it’s supporting the continuation of an art and skill.
